Ash Dieback is a fungal disease which is affecting all species of ash trees across South-West Wales as well as the rest of the country.

The fungus attaches itself to the leaves of ash trees and spreads through to the branches, causing the tree to die. Dead branches and entire dead trees can become very brittle and fall, posing a serious risk to the public and a major headache for Landowners.

Ash dieback is a major issue for councils and landowners across the UK; it is estimated 90% of ash trees could die from this disease with currently no known treatment and whilst the Council are currently identifying and tagging trees it is essential that Landowners report any sightings of Ash Dieback as soon as possible after identification. This is because the disease must be quarantined to prevent further infestation and spread and because of the risk to the public.

The legal position is that the owner of the land where a tree stands is responsible for the health and safety of those who could be affected by that tree. Liabilities can arise if trees or branches fall. So, it is important that landowners can recognise the symptoms of Ash Dieback, and other diseases, in order to deal with trees which pose a risk. In addition, the Council will be removing some trees but will not be responsible for removing them all.

Few farm businesses will be spared the cost of dealing with ash dieback, and for those with infected trees straddling public roads, bills could run into thousands of pounds.

In the UK, landowners are responsible for undertaking risk management of the dangers, but in Wales, councils have gone a step further and farmers in Wales are being issued with orders to remove trees infected with ash dieback.
